Design for Driving

SiriusXM and Pandora are bringing the future of radio into cars with their 360L automotive solution. 360L is designed to give users an unprecedented amount of content to discover and listen to from SiriusXM’s expansive lineup of live broadcast channels, podcasts, artist stations and more.

The Opportunity

Whereas previous SAT only instantiations of SiriusXM in the vehicle were limited to unsophisticated center console car radios, newer cars have Android-based operating systems running on what are essentially feature-rich tablets. This not only allows cars to connect to SiriusXM satellites, but also connect to the internet much in the same way smartphones do. These capabilities extend far beyond the center console, including passenger and rear seat infotainment displays, HUDs, and voice. 


As the lead product designer covering all domestic automotive manufacturers including Ford, GM, Stellantis (Dodge, RAM, Jeep, Fiat, Chrysler, Peugeot, Opel), and Tesla, my role is to work closely with OEMs help bring SiriusXM’s 360L features into each OEM’s in-car entertainment systems in an exceptional, intuitive, and highly user-safe way. The public release dates of these designs range from 2020-2024.

Design automotive experiences that are intuitive, safe to use while driving, and consistent with other SiriusXM experiences across mobile phones, tablets, web, and TV.

​Establish a system for translating SiriusXM’s automotive reference design to all of our various automotive partners’ automotive interfaces, working to ensure that SiriusXM’s app matches the native automotive system’s look and feel.

Design Process

The end to end design process for an automotive partner includes but is not limited to leading design & UX workshops, concepting, whiteboarding, IA, wireframing, prototyping, competitive benchmarking, visual design and design studies, iconography, screen mocking, animations, annotations/documentation, design validation, and user testing. 

 

As a lead designer, my role also included collaborating closely with Product Managers, Engineers, Automotive Partners and other corporate stakeholders to clearly communicate and document the vision of the User Experience so that it can then be implemented by internal and external engineering teams.
